Regulations
The sale of taxidermy is regulated by both federal and state law, with each state varying in their regulations. Keep in mind that federal laws trump state laws. Be sure to check regulations in your state before purchasing a specimen. Listed below are some major federal acts pertaining to the sale of taxidermy within the United States.

The Marine Mammal Protection Act (MMPA)
The MMPA protects all marine mammals. It prohibits "the take" of marine mammals from U.S. waters and by U.S. citizens on higher seas. Along with that it also restricts the importation of marine mammals and marine mammal products into the U.S. To learn more you can visit the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service website


The Endangered Species Act (ESA)
The ESA works to preserve  domestic and international conservation. It works conserve and protect both endangered species and their habitats. Thus, making it unlawful to sell these species or parts. The Migratory Bird Treaty Act (MBTA)
The MBTA protects migratory birds. Thus, making it illegal to purchase, sell, transport, etc. any migratory bird and or parts of pieces, including, eggs and or nests. A full list of birds and terms can be found on the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service website.
